Why There Are Different Systems of Units
A unit of measurement is an agreed magnitude of a quantity, such as the meter for length or the kilogram for mass. Historically, units were local and often arbitrary — a "foot" or an "inch" could be based on a body part or a king's thumb — which worked for local trade but made commerce and science between regions hard. The need for a shared standard led to the metric system and, in 1960, the International System of Units (SI), which defines seven base units: the meter, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole and candela.

Most of the world uses the metric system, which is decimal and scales by powers of ten with prefixes like kilo-, centi- and milli-. The United States still uses US customary units — inches, feet, miles, ounces, pounds and gallons — in daily life, and the United Kingdom uses a mix. Why is temperature handled differently from the other categories?
Length, weight, and volume conversions are all simple multiplication (a fixed ratio between units). Temperature scales have different zero points, so converting between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin needs addition and multiplication together, not just a multiplier.
