The Relationship Between the Parts
The quotient is how many whole times the divisor fits into the dividend. Whatever's left over — too small for the divisor to divide again — is the remainder. These always satisfy quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend, which is a quick way to check any long division by hand: 24 × 4 + 1 = 97.
