The Formula
Each letter grade converts to a grade point on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down through F = 0.0). GPA is the credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add those products together, then divide by the total credit hours — so a 4-credit class affects your GPA more than a 1-credit class with the same grade.
A Note on Grading Scales
The 4.0 scale with +/- adjustments used here is the most common in the US, but exact grade-point values (especially for A-, B+, and similar) can vary slightly between institutions — some don't use +/- at all. Check your school's official scale if you need this to match your transcript exactly.
Worked example
Four courses — A (3 credits), B+ (3 credits), A- (4 credits), and B (3 credits) — earn 12.0 + 9.9 + 14.8 + 9.0 = 45.7 grade points across 13 credit hours, for a weighted GPA of 45.7 ÷ 13 ≈ 3.52.
